Well Of Souls

The Well of Souls (Bir el- Arweh) is a subterranean chamber beneath the Dome of the Rock in the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The chamber is located beneath the rock is known to Jews as Eben Shetiyyah and to Muslims as Sakhrah. Members of these faiths believe it to be the place where God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his first born son: Isaac in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and Ishmael in the Muslim tradition. Muslim tradition holds that the Well of Souls is where the righteous dead meet to pray twice weekly. It is believed that when Muhammad was brought here by night he led the dead in prayer here. Some visitors report ghostly sounds audible from above the Well of Souls. A less frequently cited tradition holds that the cave is located atop the Abyss of Chaos and it is the Rivers of Paradise which can be heard below. The movie Raiders of the Lost Ark depicted the Well of Souls as the hiding place of the Ark of the Covenant, but placed it as a lost chamber in Egypt (filmed in Tunisia) instead of a cave in the Temple Mount. This loosely agrees with legends that the Ark of the Covenant and other Temple artifacts were hidden somewhere beneath the Temple Mount (perhaps in the Well of Souls) at the time of the destruction of the first temple. Many things have been created around the name "Well of Souls", including the game, "Well of Souls", by Dan Samuel, the "Well of Souls" gaming community, and the "Arioch's Well of Souls".
