Weld County, Colorado Weld County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 180,936. The county seat is Greeley. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,416 km² (4,022 mi²). 10,340 km² (3,992 mi²) of it is land and 75 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 180,936 people, 63,247 households, and 45,221 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (45/mi²). There are 66,194 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.71% White, 0.56% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 13.29% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races. 27.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 63,247 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 21.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.25. In the county the population is spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 13.20% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $42,321, and the median income for a family is $49,569. Males have a median income of $35,037 versus $25,757 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,957. 12.50% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.60% of those under the age of 18 and 8.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Cities and towns History Weld Cunty was organized as one of the seventeen original Colorado counties by the First Territorial Legislature on November 1, 1861. Until February 9, 1887, its boundaries included the area now comprising Weld County, Washington County, Logan County, Morgan County, Yuma County, Phillips County, and Sedgwick County.
