Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,853 km² (716 mi²). 1,849 km² (714 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,151 people, 7,143 households, and 4,971 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 7,950 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.71% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,143 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.88.
