Wayne, West VirginiaWayne is a town located in Wayne County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,105. It is the county seat of Wayne County. Geography Wayne is located at 38°13'42" North, 82°26'26" West (38.228417, -82.440577). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,105 people, 486 households, and 322 families residing in the town. The population density is 656.4/km² (1,698.1/mi²). There are 561 housing units at an average density of 333.2/km² (862.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.01% White, 0.09% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 486 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 31.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.77. In the town the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $20,242, and the median income for a family is $24,750. Males have a median income of $27,292 versus $23,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,626. 30.3% of the population and 25.3% of families are below the poverty line.
