Waterloo, New South Wales

Waterloo is an inner-city suburb of the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Waterloo is part of the City of Sydney Local Government Area. Up until recently, Waterloo was a relatively poor area, many public housing estates for those on low-incomes, were built in the second half of the 20th century by the New South Wales Department of Housing. Today, despite some social problems in some parts of the suburb, Waterloo is a undergoing gentrification with a rising business district focusing on technology-oriented firms and the development of more green space such as parks. As of 2004, in development is Green Square, an urban renewal program which will see the building of a town square in Waterloo (Green Square area) which the developers claim will make it the most modern area of Sydney. This is expected to attract considerable amounts investment, retail and modern housing. Waterloo is accessible by bus from the city and 2000 saw the opening of the Airport line of CityRail. This railway passes through Waterloo at Green Square underground station.
