Washington County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 21,176. The county's county seat is Sandersville, Georgia6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,773 km² (684 mi²). 1,762 km² (680 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,176 people, 7,435 households, and 5,382 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 8,327 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 45.73% White, 53.20% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,435 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.70% are married couples living together, 21.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.17. In the county the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 81.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,910, and the median income for a family is $36,325. Males have a median income of $33,263 versus $21,388 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,565. 22.90% of the population and 18.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.00% of those under the age of 18 and 23.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
