Warrumbungle Shire CouncilThe Warrumbungle Shire Council is a newly created local government area in the State of New South Wales set up after amalgamation of several smaller local government areas. The council headquarters is located at the town of Coonabarabran on the busy Newell Highway. The new council has incorporated the previous local government areas of Coonabarabran, Binnaway, Dunedoo and Coolah. Prior to the amalgamation being finalised the respective councils were run by an administrator however elections were held in March 2005. As a result of these elections the Warrumbungle Shire Council is now one of the newest local governement areas in the state. The new council has a most important role in managing some of the most important areas of the state. Massive numbers of people visit the areas to see the Warrumbungles mountain area which is a fascinating geological area of the state. The new council has to administer various important issues such as looking after roads, removing rubbish and charging rates. The council employs many dozens of local people who have diverse jobs such as working out of council offices to driving trucks and collecting garbage. There is also the issue of the fact that the very busy Newell Highway runs through Coonabarabran and a large number of other areas that are located in the newly formed shire. The Newell Highway is the major road link inland between Melbourne and Brisbane. This makes it a very important road link as these two cities are the second and third biggest cities respectively on the continent of Australia. It is important that the new council can liaise effectively with the controlling authority of the highway, the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority to ensure that the highway itself and all roads leading onto it are capable of handling the large numbers of vehicular traffic which use the road as a vital link between two of the largest cities in the nation. The transport role of the highway includes not only shifting goods with trucks but also massive numbers of tourists particularly Victorians on their way up to Queensland. Large numbers of cars towing caravans can be seen at any time passing through all areas of the newly formed local government area that is know known as the Warrumbungle Shire Council.
