Warrington South (Constituency)

Warrington South is a UK parliamentary constituency comprising (approximately) that part of Warrington, Cheshire, which lies south of the River Mersey. Historically, the two Warrington seats consisted of one central, urban constituency and a much larger (in terms of area) rural constituency. This was replaced with the current north/south arrangement, though the exact area of the constituency was altered significantly between the 1992 and 1997 general elections to accommodate the creation of another Cheshire constituency. Politically Warrington South is considered the more interesting of the two Warrington seats. The town is traditionally Labour-voting, the north more so, yet the south is considered the more 'winnable' seat by both the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. What makes it interesting is that the fate of the Warrington South seat is thought to reflect on how the parties fare nationally. Warrington South currently has a Labour MP (as does Warrington North) yet most of the borough council seats in the constituency are held by the Liberal Democrats, who nevertheless come third in the general election behind the Conservatives. The constituency has the Press Association (PA) number 612.
