Warnborough College Founded in Oxford Warnborough College was established in Oxford in 1973 to provide academic excellence, personal and career enhancement, and build a global network of alumni. Founding honorary sponsors included the Presidents of Duke University, the Catholic University of America, Hampshire College, Bradford College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges; the Chancellors of North Carolina State University and the Claremont Colleges; the Bishops of the Dioceses of South Carolina, California, and Western Massachusetts; the President of the National Council of Churches of America; and, the State Secretary of the Australian-British Trade Association. These sponsors were fully committed to Warnborough because it provided students with excellent educational opportunities. Sir Christopher White, Bart., the Lord Mayor of Oxford, and other dignitaries spoke at the inaugural reception held at Rhodes House, Oxford, of the enthusiasm that the college had inspired in academics and educators. Immediate Recognition Warnborough was an independent institution that provided overseas students with the opportunity to enjoy the "Oxford ethos", in other words, a unique learning and living experience in a cosmopolitan city. There was considerable support and recognition of Warnborough among those engaged in international education. Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent her warmest wishes for a successful future. Thereafter, Warnborough expanded its programmes in Oxford and Australia, thereby attracting students from all over the world. In 1987, the Archbishop of Canterbury authorised the appointment of an Honorary Chaplain to Warnborough, who was also responsible for the Warnborough Australian Studies Programmes, which had been established in 1985. These residential programmes exist throughout the year in Sydney and Brisbane. Students from many parts of the world have participated in our programmes, for which the college has now achieved global recognition. Royalty, presidents, politicians, film stars and other celebrities have enrolled their sons and daughters at Warnborough, where recognition and encouragement of individual aspirations are of paramount importance. Students have graduated with such academic and social awareness as have been beneficial to their chosen careers. Several American Presidents have sent good wishes for Warnborough graduation ceremonies. Expansion In 1996, Warnborough took the initiative to further the academic interests of students worldwide by providing them with traditional learning in different environments, as well as the opportunity for distant learning. Characteristic of both options is the individual attention that each student receives from their personal mentor. In early 1997, *Warnborough University was founded from the basic principles of Warnborough College. For more information on this global university, please see their website. Warnborough, with its own traditions and history, has become immortalised in the hearts and minds of its many students. This is attested to by the staunch support given by the Warnborough Worldwide Alumni Association, that driving force which is dedicated to the success of Warnborough and the continuance of its vision. As Warnborough University expanded, it decided to focus more on degree programmes, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. Canterbury The decision was taken in late 2000 to begin a new chapter for Warnborough College and Canterbury was selected as the new location. Steeped in history, and the first place in England where education was formalised, Canterbury made an ideal choice. Its close proximity to Europe was also conducive for European students. It is somehow poetic that the Archbishop of Canterbury had appointed an honorary chaplain to Warnborough over a decade ago. It is also poetic that the Warnborough House in Canterbury is very similar to the original Warnborough House in Oxford. Now, Warnborough College looks to another 30 years of history.
