Wardsboro is a town located in Windham County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 854.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 75.8 km² (29.3 mi²). 75.8 km² (29.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 854 people, 358 households, and 234 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.3/km² (29.2/mi²). There are 766 housing units at an average density of 10.1/km² (26.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.48% White, 0.35% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 358 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.91. In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 109.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $35,000, and the median income for a family is $43,333. Males have a median income of $28,083 versus $22,656 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,165. 7.6% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.2% of those under the age of 18 and 16.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Wardsboro is approximately six miles north of Mount Snow ski area and less than 10 miles south of Stratton ski area. There are numerous planned communities such as Snow Mountain Farms, which offers such ammenities as an Indoor Pool and Tennis Courts. Somerset Reservoir and Grout Pond are only a few minutes away, and the VAST Snowmobile trails run through the town.
