Wapello County, Iowa Wapello County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 36,051. Its county seat is Ottumwa, Iowa6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,129 km² (436 mi²). 1,118 km² (432 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.96% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,051 people, 14,784 households, and 9,801 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (84/mi²). There are 15,873 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.28% White, 0.93% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.05% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,784 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.70% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.89. In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,188, and the median income for a family is $39,224. Males have a median income of $31,346 versus $21,286 for females.
