WankerWanker is profane slang for a contemptible person, meaning literally one who wanks (masturbates). In Britain it is particularly used of someone (usually male) who is a self-obsessed show-off. It originated in Britain and is similar to the U.S. insult "jerk-off". Although masturbation is acknowledged as a widespread practice, the insulting properties of these terms still remain. The insult can also be conveyed using a hand gesture involving curling the fingers of the (usually right) hand into a loose fist and moving the hand back and forth in symbolic imitation of the act of male masturbation. The term "wanker" was not considered profane in the United States because it is rarely used in this sense, and is a genuine (though rare) surname. In the American sitcom Married... with Children, the character Peggy's maiden name was Wanker. Al Bundy's in-laws were therefore "the Wankers". An episode of Mork & Mindy included a character called Arnold Wanker. However, it is unlikely that the term would now be used in an American broadcasting, since awareness of "wanking" as a term for masturbation spread to the United States in the 2000s. A related slang term is "wankered" which indicates intoxication, as in "I was totally wankered last night". The term is commonly used in the United Kingdom, but almost never in the United States. In the early 1980s in Australia, a character known as Leo Wanker was portrayed as an incompetent stuntman on the Paul Hogan Show - and served to illustrate the literary progress made towards Australian independence.
