Walzenhausen

Walzenhausen is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland. It has a population of 2,100 (2002). The area of Walzenhauen is 6.98 km². Walzenhausen is the eastern most village in the canton Appenzell Outer Rhodes. It lies at 670 m and offers a panorama of Lake Constance 300 m below. The farm Walzenhausen was mentioned first in 1320. The church was built in 1638 in as little as nine months. This was the establishment of Walzenhausen as a municipality. In the past textiles played an important role, but today tourism has taken this role. This is facilitated by good public transport links. The Bergbahn Rheineck-Walzenhausen links the village to Rheineck, 272 m below.
