VoluntariVoluntari is a suburban town of Bucharest in the Ilfov county Romania. It is located at a distance of 1 Km from Bucharest, on National Road 2. Population is estimated at 15,000 inhabitants, with an ethnical composition formed of 76,2% Romanians, 20,0% Rroma, 2,2% Chinese, 1,6% others (2004 unofficial estimates based on voting registration). Low prices on terrain, immediate vecinity to the city and easy and reliable access to both the railway network and the road network has assured a steady development of industrial and commercial facilities, especially in light industries and import/export commerce (Town GDP estimate has increased with over 25% in the last 4 years). Even with such high development rates, many residents remain unemployed or work in neighboring Bucharest. Voluntari was awarded city status in 2004, but this decision is seen by many to be a political decision to reward the inhabitants for their voting preferences rather than an objective decision. With 2.2% of the populate of Chinese ethnicity, Voluntari has one of the largest proportions of Chinese people in Romania. The Roma minority, which makes up 20%, is also by far higher than the national average.
