Voevode

Voevode (воевода) was a high military rank in old Russia. Voevode was simultaneously the goveror of some province or town and the most important military officer in it. The rank was abolished by Peter the Great in the mid-18th century. People who led the rebels in Bulgaria during Ottoman rule were also called voevodes.
