Vo Chi Cong
Vo Chi Cong
(born
1914
) was a
Vietnamese
Communist
political figure
. Cong's political activities began in
1930
when he joined with
Phan Boi Chau
and
Phan Chau Trinh
, two early nationalists who opposed the
French
regime. He fought with the resistance against the
Vichy French
during
World War II
, and was arrested in
1942
. After the war, he faded into obscurity before becoming a founding member of the
National Liberation Front
in
1961
, an important arm of the
Viet Cong
. He was a key figure in the
South Vietnamese
communist party and was rewarded after the reunification of Vietnam with a seat on the
Politburo
in
1976
. He served in various cabinets posts after that, including minister of fisheries (
1976
-
1977
), minister of agriculture (
1977
-
1978
), and deputy prime minister (
1976
-
1982
) before serving as
president of Vietnam
between
1987
and
1992
