Vittorio Vidali

Vittorio Vidali (b.1900 - ?) was a Communist Party agent best known for his romantic involvement with photographer Tina Modotti, as well as his involvement in the assassination of Leon Trotsky. Born in Italy, Vidali was one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but was expelled from the country after the Fascists' ascent to power. Vidali relocated to Moscow, where he was enlisted into the Stalinist secret police. With Red Aid as his cover, Vidali was sent by the Comintern to Mexico to discipline its Communist Party. He seems to have fallen in love with photographer Tina Modotti, fueling suspicions that he might have had a hand in the killing of her lover, Julio Mella, who had left the Communist Party. During the 1930s, Vidali headed the anti-Trotskyist faction of the International Brigades in Spain, and is thought to have participated in the assassinations of anti-Stalinist activists there. Vidali is also belived to have been instrumental in the May 23, 1940 attempt on Leon Trotsky's life and in the eventual assassination of Trotsky on August 20, 1940.
