Viracopos-Campinas International Airport is the international airport in Campinas, Brazil. Besides being a busy passenger terminal, it is the second-largest cargo airport in Brazil. One of its main features is that it is rarely closed due to bad weather conditions (a mean of 5 days per year). The airport is located 90 km (58 miles) from So Paulo and 14 km (8 miles) from Campinas, close by the huge Bandeirantes and Anhanguera highway complex which connects the capital city to the interior. Before the completion of Guarulhos International Airport in 1985, Viracopos was the international gateway to Sao Paulo. Due to the airfield's distance from the city, international flights directly to Sao Paulo were limited; most passengers simply opted to fly to Rio de Janeiro and connect to the smaller Congonhas Airport, which was much closer to the city. Facilities at the airport include:
  • 150-180 flights per day
  • 2,500 passengers/day
  • 40 cargo airline companies.
  • 3,240 m runway
  • 60,000 square meters of cargo terminals.
  • 1,700 square meters for animal cargo
  • 1,480 cubic meters of refrigerated space
  • 65 m high air traffic control tower.
As a major import/export hub, Viracopos enjoys exceptionally (for the country) quick and unbureaucratic 'express lanes' for courier traffic.
