Villalvernia

Villalvernia is a council in the Province of Alessandria in Piedmont, Italy, placed on a hilly relief on the right side of torrent Scrivia .

History

Probably founded during the tenth century, and simply called Villa, was partially conceded as feud to the bishops of Tortona by Pope Adriano IV . In 1413 Filippo Maria Visconti conceded it as feud to Guglielmo d'Alvernia. The Alvernias had the authority of the village for 167 years, casting their name with that of the place. In 1580 the feud passed under the authority of Spinola family, after the wedding of Francesco with Antonia Alvernia. In 1652 feudatarians obtain the title of Marquess from Filippo IV , king of Spain. On December 1 1944 the village was bombed by the american air force, aiming for the railway offices transferred from Genoa. 114 inhabitants were killed, and 235 wounded in the bombing.
