Viktor Vasnetsov Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (Виктор Михайлович Васнецов) (may 15 (N.S.), 1848—1926) was a Russian painter, theatre decorator, graphic designer, and painter of mythological and historical pictures. He is considered as the initiator of the "Russian national", "neorussian" style in art. Viktor Vasnetsov and his brother Appolinary Vasnetsov were part of the artistic fellowship "Peredvizhniks" ("Передвижники"), a group of young artists who travelled with their mobile exibitions all over Russia. Peredvizhniks enjoyed the patronage of the industrialist and maecenas Savva Mamontov. When Mamontov created his private opera company, The Moscow Private Opera, the artists of the group did much of the design work for his productions. The most important of these was the design by Viktor Vasnetsov for the Rimsky-Korsakov opera Snow Maiden (Snegurochka), in 1885. Both brothers were involved in the design of another Rimsky-Korsakov opera, Sadko, in 1897. Their stage and costume designs were influential both in Russian and in European opera. Another important influence was the Abramtsevo circle of painters, also under Mamontov's patronage, called after Mamontov's estate Abramtsevo. Further Reading
