View Royal, British Columbia

View Royal is a municipality in Greater Victoria and a part of the Capital Regional District of British Columbia, Canada. View Royal has a population of approximately 8000 residents and was incorporated as a municipality in December 1988. View Royal primarily overlooks Portage Inlet on the Esquimalt Harbour. Bordered on the south by the Esquimalt Harbour, on the west by Colwood on the north-west by Langford, on the north by the Highlands, on the north-east by Saanich, on the east by Esquimalt and the Esquimalt Nation reservation. View Royal has a rich history that is closely linked to the entire region. Originally settled by Dr. John Helmcken in the 1850's several historic sites can be found in View Royal including the oldest continuously operating pub in the province of British Columbia, the Six Mile Pub founded in 1855. The Esquimalt First Nation have occupied View Royal for time immemorial. Several changes have gone on in View Royal in recent years, including the move by Great Canadian Casinos into a large complex on the Old Island Highway, with the municipality receiving a percentage of the profits in a contractual agreement for the next 20 years.
