Romanian
biologist and one of the earliest
bacteriologists
. Born in
Vienna
in a family from the
Banat
, he studied in
Budapest
, then in
Vienna
, where he received his doctorate. In
1885
he discovered a
parasitic
sporozoan
of the
ticks
that was named
Babesia
(of genus
Babesiidae
) after him and which causes a rare and severe disease called
babesiosis
. He became a member of the
Romanian Academy
, of the Paris Academie of Medicin and an officer of the French
Legion of Honour
