Vernon, Vermont

Vernon is a town located in Windham County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,141. Vernon is the home of the only nuclear power plant in Vermont. The plant is known as, "Vermont Yankee", and is owned by Entergy Corporation.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 51.8 km² (20.0 mi²). 50.2 km² (19.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.15% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,141 people, 741 households, and 574 families residing in the town. The population density is 42.7/km² (110.5/mi²). There are 784 housing units at an average density of 15.6/km² (40.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.60% White, 0.28% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 741 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% are non-families. 17.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.12. In the town the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $49,688, and the median income for a family is $55,625. Males have a median income of $35,845 versus $25,139 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,720. 2.8% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.3% of those under the age of 18 and 2.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
