Vermillion County, Indiana Vermillion County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 16,788. The county's county seat is Newport, Indiana6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 673 km² (260 mi²). 665 km² (257 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,788 people, 6,762 households, and 4,713 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (65/mi²). There are 7,405 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.39% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,762 households out of which 30.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.94. In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $34,837, and the median income for a family is $41,809. Males have a median income of $32,279 versus $22,647 for females.
