Verdon GorgeVerdon Gorge (in French: Gorges du Verdon or Grand canyon du Verdon) is a river canyon in south-eastern France (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence). It was formed by the Verdon River, which flows through it. The most impressive part lies between the town Castellane and the artificial lake of Sainte-Croix-de-Verdon. The limestone walls, that are several hundreds of meters high, are a major tourist attraction. The canyon is also an attractive rock climbing area. It is considered by many who venture there to be the ultimate multi-pitch destination. This vertical world has routes encompassing cracks, pillars and seemingly endless walls. The climbing is generally of a technical nature, and the vastness of the gorge is impressive. There are over 1,500 routes on limestone, ranging from 20m to those in excess of 400m.
