Verdigre is a village located in Knox County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 519.

Geography

Verdigre is located at 42°35'47" North, 98°2'3" West (42.596437, -98.034118). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 519 people, 232 households, and 122 families residing in the village. The population density is 357.8/km² (934.1/mi²). There are 286 housing units at an average density of 197.2/km² (514.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.88% White, 0.00% African American, 1.93% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 232 households out of which 19.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.4% are non-families. 45.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 34.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.92 and the average family size is 2.71. In the village the population is spread out with 15.2% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 16.2% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 45.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 59 years. For every 100 females there are 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.0 males. The median income for a household in the village is $21,667, and the median income for a family is $30,208. Males have a median income of $22,031 versus $12,708 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,128. 10.0% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.9% of those under the age of 18 and 19.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
