Venusaur (フシギバナ Fushigibana in Japanese) is a fictional character from the Pokmon franchise. Venusaur carries a flower on its back; the blossom is used to collect energy from sunlight, giving off a pleasant fragrance in the process. Due to this, a Venusaur is usually moving around in an effort to follow the sun; furthermore, it is more powerful in summer when it is able to absorb more sunlight.

Name origin

Venusaur's name is likely a combination of "Venus," in reference to the Venus flytrap, and the Greek sauros, meaning lizard (as in the word "dinosaur"). Its Japanese name, フシギバナ (Fushigibana), is probably a combination of the words ふしぎ (fushigi, mystery) and はな (hana, flower).

Availability

The only way to get a Venusaur in any of the Pokmon games is to evolve an Ivysaur, and the only way to obtain an Ivysaur is to evolve a Bulbasaur. Therefore, the availability of Bulbasaur dictates the availability of Venusaur.

Anime Appearances

In the first season of the Pokmon anime, Ash Ketchum and company come across a secret garden where Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur. A Venusaur protects this garden against everything except evolving Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. In the Advanced Challenge season, there is an episode titled "King of the Forbidden Forest! Venusaur!" which involves a Venusaur guarding a forest of Grass Pokmon.
