Velsharoon

Velsharoon, Archmage of Necromancy, is a fictional Faerun demigod of the Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting, created by Ed Greenwood.

Overview

Velsharoon is said to live and dwell in Dweomerheart, a realm of Eronia. Two temples have been built in his honour, by his followers, one named the "Mortuary", situated in in the High Peaks, and another in the High Peaks named "Zalek Karanok". He is or was Neutral Evil, and he is worshipped by many liches, necromancers, undead, and other incessant searchers for immortality. The Cult of the Dragon is thought to worship him. Velsharoon's trademark weapon is known as the "Skull Staff of the Necromancer", which is an enchanted quarterstaff. The symbol of Velsharoon, is a laughing lich skull with a crown.

Life

Mortal life

Before his lichdom, Velsharoon was a young maverick wizard of the Red Wizards of Thay, whose rival was Szass Tam, the heinous Zulkir of Necromancy. Velsharoon discovered a set of texts penned by the Storm Lord Talos, which allowed him to achieve immortality and divinity; however, the astute Velsharoon was swift to realize that the Storm Lord would exploit his newfound divinity for his own purposes.

Lichdom and a change of alliance

After making this discovery, Velsharoon pledged his allegiance instead to Azuth. Talos was furious at this betrayal, and attempted to act in vengeance. However, he was stopped by Mystra. The scheming Velsharoon has renewed his old alliance with Talos since, and has also started flirting with Shar, though he still serves Azuth. He despises the new god Cyric and all his followers, and is in constant feuds with other demigods.

Death

Velsharoon was destroyed by another necromancer, named Zanatose. Zanatose defeated the god by casting a spell using a banished and forgotten phylactery, which drained his powers and transferred them to Zanatose himself. Zanatose then banished the lifeless body of Velsharoon to the Astral Plane. Ao, the overdeity, granted Zanatose the title of God afterwards, in recognition of his new evil powers.

Talimshan

Velsharoon was responsible for the corruption of the lands of Talimshan, and the overthrow of Cyryllynese; in this he was aided by the gods Lolth, Abbathor, Gruumsh, and Yeenoghu. Velsharoon's part in this coup was the rise of the dead and their conversion to undeath.
