Velbert is a North-Rhine-Westphalian (Germany) city in the hills of the Berg. Distance from nearby cities is approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the state capital Düsseldorf and 12 kilometers northwest of Wuppertal on the left side of the Ruhr river. The population as of 2002 was 89,782. The quarter Langenberg is well known as transmitter site.

Geography

Velbert is on the heights of the Berg and also heart of the Middle Berg. It lies approx. 230 meters above sea level (highest point: 303 meters (Hordt-Berg), lowest point: approx. 80 meters (in Nierenhof am Deilbach)). The highest point in Velbert itself is 263 meters above sea level, at the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Langenberger Strasse.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms on the left originated from 1882 and was valid until the communal reform of 1975. It shows the lion of the counts and later dukes of Berg, originally the symbol of Limburg. The keys refer to the traditional locksmith handicraft in Velbert. After the communal reform a new coat of arms was created for the enlarged city, including heraldic symbols of the incorporated towns of Langenberg and Neviges. The oak leaf refers to the oak of Langenberg, the key to the masters of Hardenberg, taken from the coat of arms of Neviges.

Economics

The main industries of Velbert are the production of bricks and fittings, as well as limestone mining. Several quarries were created; the former quarry Schlupkothen has developed a lake at the bottom, which is now a nature preserve.

Transportation

Since December 2003, the S-Bahn-connection S9 Haltern am See-Marl-Bottrop-Essen-Langenberg (Rheinland)-Neviges-Wuppertal with a main station, which is very attractive for occupation commuters. Downtown Velbert possesses no railway connection. In the station, buildings from Velbert-West and Velbert's main station are restaurants today, and the station (Velbert-Tönishede) is no longer in operation. (all three formerly passed Wlfrath-Velbert-Heiligenhaus-Kettwig). In enterprise are the stations Nevihen, Langenburg and Neviges as well as Lohmühle station. Velbert used to have a tram. The lines met in Velbert, connecting lines from Heidhausen, from Neviges, Wülfrath and from Hösel with Heilingenhaus. Nowadays several bus lines connect Velbert with the surrounding cities. The city belongs to Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr.

Twinned cities

since 1965 Velbert has twinned cities between cities of Since 1979, these three cities united to a rare three-partnership. Velbert connects a friendly relationship with Hacibektas in Turkey and Thesprotia in Greece.

Administration

Velbert is divided into the three administrative quarters: Velbert-Mitte, Neviges and Langenberg. Historically there are numerous urban districts; among them Töenisheide, Losenburg, Nordpark, Langenhorst, Rtzkausen, Birth (pronunciation: BEERT), Rttgen und Hefel.

Incorporations

As part of the communal reform in North Rhine-Westphalia becoming effective on January 1, 1975, the former independent cities Velbert, Neviges and Langenfeld was merged into this city.
