Varick, New York

Varick is a town located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,729. The town is probably named after Richard Varick, an officer in the American Revolution and New York political leader. The Town of Varick is located in the central part of the county between two Finger Lakes.

History

The town was formed from the Town of Romulus in 1830.

Geography

The east town line, defined by Cayuga Lake, is the border of Cayuga County. The west town line, at Seneca Lake is the border of Ontario County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 118.2 km² (45.6 mi²). 83.6 km² (32.3 mi²) of it is land and 34.5 km² (13.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,729 people, 630 households, and 473 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.7/km² (53.6/mi²). There are 840 housing units at an average density of 10.0/km² (26.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.26% White, 0.52% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 630 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.13. In the town the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $40,110, and the median income for a family is $43,917. Males have a median income of $32,566 versus $28,636 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,164. 10.1% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
