Vanderburgh County, Indiana

Vanderburgh County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 171,922. The county seat is located in Evansville, Indiana. The county was founded in 1818.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 611 km² (236 mi²). 608 km² (235 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 171,922 people, 70,623 households, and 44,421 families residing in the county. The population density is 283/km² (733/mi²). There are 76,300 housing units at an average density of 126/km² (325/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.30% White, 8.19% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 70,623 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.50% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.10% are non-families. 31.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.93. In the county the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 11.50% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $36,823, and the median income for a family is $47,416. Males have a median income of $34,162 versus $22,869 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,655. 11.20% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.40% of those under the age of 18 and 7.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
