Van Dyke Expressway

The Van Dyke Expressway is an 8.75 mile discrete segment of controlled-access freeway in the US state of Michigan. This highway is designated as M-53. As of 2002, the Romeo bypass (continuing on north of the freeway) is upgraded to a divided highway and will eventually become a controlled-access freeway someday. Today, the Van Dyke Expressway is the only discrete segment of freeway in Michigan since the St. John bypass (US-127) which was incorporated into our freeway system in 1998. In terms of both within the state of Michigan and our network of free-of-charge freeways, US-31 (near niles) is an exception to this situation though it will be incorporated to Michigan's other freeways very soon. There was another instance of the Van Dyke Expressway being the only discrete segment of freeway in Michigan. In the early 1980's, there was a (US-131) freeway gap in the very center of the lower peninsula. After it got filled in, The Van Dyke Expressway became the only discrete freeway segment in the state. Then, there was the St. Johns bypass, then that was incorporated to our conjointed freeway system; then the VDE became the only discrete segment again and has been that way ever since. The VDE is also known as the Christopher Columbus Freeway.
