Van Buren County, Iowa Van Buren County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 7,809. Its county seat is Keosauqua, Iowa6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,271 km² (491 mi²). 1,256 km² (485 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,809 people, 3,181 households, and 2,163 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (16/mi²). There are 3,581 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.62% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,181 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 6.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.96. In the county the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
