Vampeneze

  Darren Shan
In Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak series of children's books, Vampeneze are the vampires worst enemy. In the 1600's the vampires decided to not kill their prey, instead just taking as much blood as they needed. Some vampires didn't like this and separated from the vampires who had accepted the change. They became the vampeneze and continued to drink their prey dry. This resulted in thier skin turning purple and their eyes becoming blood red. Shan's concept of the vampire differs from Hollywood moaning, neck-biting kind. His vampires can't fly, morph, and will not kill their prey. They don't have sharp teeth and neither holy water nor the cross are effective against them. A stake into the heart does kill them, though, it would kill you too. The closest they can get to flying is something called fliting; when vampires sprint, and they go so fast the naked eye can not see them. They take their extremely sharp nails and make a small incision into, usually, the back of your arm to take as much as they need and close the cut with their spit which has special healing powers.
