Valrico, Florida

Valrico is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Hillsborough County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 6,582.

History

Valrico began as a region of cotton plantations known as Long Pond. The arrival of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad in 1890 brought many new immigrants from points north. William G. Tousey, a philosophy professor from Tufts College, gave the community its current name, Spanish for "valley of gold".

Geography

Valrico is located at 27°56'27" North, 82°14'33" West (27.940774, -82.242551). According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.5 km² (5.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.41% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,582 people, 2,632 households, and 1,826 families residing in the community. The population density is 454.6/km² (1,176.9/mi²). There are 2,831 housing units at an average density of 195.5/km² (506.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 89.32% White, 3.21% African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.57% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 12.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,632 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99. In the community the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males. The median income for a household in the community is $39,155, and the median income for a family is $50,475. Males have a median income of $32,917 versus $24,746 for females. The per capita income for the community is $20,432. 7.5% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Education

Bloomingdale High School is in Valrico, Florida. It was founded in 1987.
