The county is named for Juan de Ugalde, the Spanish governor of Coahuila. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,037 km² (1,559 mi²). 4,031 km² (1,557 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 25,926 people, 8,559 households, and 6,641 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (17/mi²). There are 10,166 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.68% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 19.65% from other races, and 3.16% from two or more races. 65.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,559 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 19.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.42. In the county, the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $27,164, and the median income for a family is $30,671. Males have a median income of $25,135 versus $16,486 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,557. 24.3% of the population and 19.90% of families are below the poverty line.
