Uss Viper

Three ships of the United States Navy have been named USS ''Viper for the limbless reptiles of the family Viperidae''. This family includes many dangerously venomous snakes inhabiting Europe, Asia, and Africa. The first Viper was originally the cutter Ferret but was rerigged as a brig and renamed just before the War of 1812, during which she was captured by the British. The second Viper was a galley hastily built and commissioned for use against the British on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. The third Viper (SS-10) was a B-class submarine renamed B-1.
