USS New Mexico (SSN-779), a Virginia-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the 47th state. The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 14 August 2003. As of 2005, her keel had not yet been laid down.
