USS ''Hatteras
'' for
Cape Hatteras
, an inlet on the coast of
North Carolina
.
The first
Hatteras
was purchased in 1861, served during the
American Civil War
and she was sunk by
Alabama
in January 1863.
The second
Hatteras
was purchased in 1917, served as a cargo ship in
World War I
and decommissioned in 1919.
