USS Halyburton (FFG-40), an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, is a ship of the United States Navy named for Pharmicist's Mate Second Class William D. Halyburton, Jr. (19241945). Halyburton was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism while serving with the 5th Marines, during the Battle of Okinawa. Halyburton was laid down on 26 September 1980 by the Todd Pacific Shipyards Co., Seattle Division, Seattle, Wash.; launched on 13 October 1981; and commissioned on 7 January 1984. As of 2005, Halyburton is homeported at NS Mayport, Florida, and is part of Destroyer Squadron 14. See USS Halyburton for other ships of the same name.
