witchcraft
in
1634
. Urban Gandier was a priest of the church of Sainte Croix at
Loudun
in
Vienne
,
France
. He had a reputation as a ladies' man. In
1632
some of the novices of the local
Ursulines
convent, encouraged by their
mother superior
, stated that Grandier had seduced them with the help of demons. Trial dragged on for two years and Grandier was eventually found guilty. He was
burned at the stake
on August 18, 1634.
