Upton County, Texas

Upton County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 3,404. Its county seat is Rankin6. The county is named for two brothers: John C. and William F. Upton, both Colonels in the Confederate army.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,216 km² (1,242 mi²). 3,216 km² (1,242 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.01% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,404 people, 1,256 households, and 934 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 1,609 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.79% White, 1.62% Black or African American, 1.20% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 17.95% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 42.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,256 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.19. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.30% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,977, and the median income for a family is $37,083. Males have a median income of $30,729 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,274. 19.90% of the population and 18.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.60% of those under the age of 18 and 13.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
