The county is named for two brothers: John C. and William F. Upton, both Colonels in the Confederate army. There are 1,256 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.19. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.30% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,977, and the median income for a family is $37,083. Males have a median income of $30,729 versus $18,750 for females.
