Unterseeboot 238

Unterseeboot 238 (U-238) was a Type VIIC submarine of the Kriegsmarine. Her keel was laid down April 21, 1942 by Germaniawerft of Kiel, and she was commissioned February 20, 1943, with Oberleutnant zur See Horst Hepp in command. Hepp commanded her for her entire career, receiving a promotions to Kapitänleutnant in the process. U-238 conducted three patrols, sinking four ships totalling 23,048 tons and damaging one other displacing 7,176 tons. On November 30, 1943, Avengers from the escort carrier USS Bogue attacked the boat killing two and wounding five men. On February 9, 1944, U-238 was sunk south-west of Ireland, by depth charges from the British sloops HMS Kite, Magpie, and Starling. She was lost with all hands (50 men). See Also: List of U-boats
