University Of Virginia's College At Wise

The University of Virginia's College at Wise commonly called Virginia-Wise is a public college located in Wise, Virginia. It is the only branch of the University of Virginia and the westernmost public college in Virginia. The school was founded in 1954 as a junior college branch of the University of Virginia known as The Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia. Prior to that time the remote and rural Appalachian region of far southwestern Virginia, which is culturally distinct and geographically inaccessible from the remainder of the state, had no public college. The original intension was to provide the first two years of college education, which would be followed by a transfer to the main campus, or to another of the state's four-year colleges. By 1970 the school evolved into a four-year college. Since that time the school has granted about 6,000 four year degrees in its own right. In 1999 the school was renamed to its current name. The school offers 25 majors and 23 teaching specializations. Current enrollment is about 1,800. In athletics, the school competes on the NAIA level and its teams are known as the Highland Cavaliers. Long term goals as the school grows might include moving to the NCAA Division II level. Students and alumni are encouraged to consider themselves as a part of the main University and follow the "big" Cavaliers as well. Virginia-Wise Wise
