University Of The Philippines, Diliman

The University of the Philippines, Diliman, or U.P. Diliman for short, is the flagship campus and the largest Autonomous University of the University of the Philippines System. It is located in Diliman, Quezon City in Metro Manila. It offers courses in Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Law, Business and Economics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Music and Fine Arts among others. It offers the most number of graduate and undergraduate courses among all the universities in the Philippines. In November 2004, Prof. Emerlinda R. Roman was elected by the U.P. Board of Regents to serve as the UP System's 19th President starting February 10, 2005. Her term will end on February 9, 2011. She is the first woman to serve such office.

Campus

The Diliman campus is located in rolling land in Quezon City in Metro Manila, just northeast of the Quezon Memorial Circle. The campus is the largest among all colleges and universities in the metropolis. Most academic buildings are located around the Academic Oval, an oblong shaped road that surrounds Quezon Hall, the Lagoon, the Main Library, and the Sunken Garden. University Avenue is 1 km long and connects the Academic Oval with Commonwealth Avenue. Among the most famous buildings are Palma Hall (informally called AS), Melchor Hall (Engineering and Architecture), Malcolm Hall (Law), and Benitez Hall (Education). The Vinzons Hall is the center of student activities.

Students

There are around 25,000 college students in the University. Approximately 5,000 are graduate students while the rest are undergraduates. There are approximately 4,000 freshmen admitted every year while about 3,000 graduate.

Organization

The University of the Philippines System is governed the U.P. Board of Regents, which is the highest policy-making body of the University. The Diliman campus is headed by a chancellor and vice-chancellors head specific offices. The University is composed of a large number of colleges (officially called, degree-granting units). In addition, the University has a number of other units that do not grant degrees:
  • U.P. Main Library
  • Military Science and Tactics, Department of
  • National Engineering Center
  • Women's Studies Center

Culture, Sports, and Traditions

The Diliman community, humorously called the Diliman Republic has a unique culture among the universities in the country. It is the only university in Metro Manila that has its own extensive system of jeepney transportation owing to its huge size. The campus encompasses many residential areas and students often feel a sense of solidarity with the community residents. U.P. Diliman is also the only university in the region that has no gates to speak of. This supposedly reflects on the highly prized academic freedom of the university. Thus, U.P. Diliman is said to be the "microcosm of the Philippines." U.P. Diliman is a member of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and participates in all events. U.P. has consistently placed in the top three for the past several years. Two of the most-awaited events in the campus is the Lantern Parade, held within the last week before the Christmas break, and the U.P. Fair, held every February. The Lantern Parade is when various groups within the University create Christmas lanterns and parade around the Academic Oval. The U.P. Fair, organized by the University Student Council, is a week-long event held at the Sunken Garden that features nightly music concerts and amusement park rides.
