University Of The District Of Columbia

The University of the District of Columbia (also known as UDC) is a public university located in Washington, DC. The university was formed in 1977 through the amalgamation of the Federal City College and Washington Technical Institute - which had both been established in 1966 as the result of a study on the educational needs of Washington that had been commissioned by President Kennedy - with District of Columbia Teacher College (which itself was formed out of the 1955 merger of the previously all-black Miner Teachers College and the all-white Wilson Teachers College). UDC is a historically black college, and is also the only urban land-grant university in the country. It does not own any accommodations, being a commuter school. The main (Van Ness) campus of UDC is located at the intersection of Connecticut Ave. and Van Ness St. in Northwest DC. UDC currently offers over 75 undergraduate and graduate academic degree programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and Public Administration, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the David A. Clarke School of Law. Additionally, the public service arm, the Division of Community Outreach and Extension Services (COES), offers a variety of practical, nonacademic educational programs and training to the citizens of the District of Columbia.
