University Of South Carolina Aiken

right The University of South Carolina Aiken is a four-year, public coeducational university in Aiken, South Carolina. The school offers undergraduate degree programs as well as master's degrees in elementary education, educational technology and applied clinical psychology. Additional graduate courses and degree programs are offered through the USC Extended Graduate Campus program. USC Aiken awards baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 major areas of study.

Campus

The campus is located in Aiken on an area of 453 acres (1.8 km²). It is 20 miles (32 km) from Augusta, Georgia, and 55 miles (89 km) from Columbia, South Carolina.

History

Founded in 1961 in a historic mansion in downtown Aiken, USCA moved to its present site in 1972.

Students

In 2003, approximately 3,200 undergraduate students attended USCA. As one of the fastest growing institutions in the USC system, USC Aiken has consistently recruited traditional and non-traditional students. Approximately 25 percent of the student body is considered non-traditional (age 25 or older). Over one-half, or 65 percent, of the students are female, and 26 percent of the students are minority. USC Aiken is also increasingly known for its emphasis on academic quality.

Recognition

U.S. News & World Report ranked USCA a top public comprehensive college in the South in the 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, and 1999 College Guides.

Athletics

NCAA Division II; Peach Belt Athletic Conference. The University fields men's teams in baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, and tennis and women's teams in basketball, cross country, softball, volleyball, soccer, and tennis. Cheerleading and a dance team are also part of the athletics department.
