University Of San Carlos

The University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City is considered by some as the oldest school in the Philippines and in Asia. Founded by the Spanish Jesuits on August 1, 1595, it was formerly known as the Colegio de San Ildefonso. This makes the school older than the University of Santo Tomas (1611) in Manila and Harvard University (1636) in the United States. However the University of Santo Tomas contests this title, noting that it became a university in 1645 while San Carlos only became one in 1948. The school of San Carlos was closed from 1769 at the expulsion of the Jesuits until 1783 when it reopened under a new name.
