University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology

right The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada is the country's newest university, which opened in September of 2003, partially to accommodate the "double cohort". (The double-cohort is the doubling of the province's high school graduating class as a result of the elimination of OAC, or Grade 13.) The University became a legal entity on June 27, 2002, as a result of the passing of Bill 109 in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. UOIT accepted over 900 students in 2003 and its student population is expected to grow to 6,000 by 2010. Currently, UOIT offers programs in the sciences, engineering, nursing, business, teacher education and criminology. The campus is located on a 400 acre (1.6 km²) property, which it shares with Durham College. UOIT is the first laptop-based learning institution in Canada. UOIT's slogan is "A brand new university for the 21st century."
