United States Lighthouse Service

right The US Lighthouse Service, also known as the Bureau of Lighthouses, was the agency of the US Federal Government that was responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all lighthouses in the United States. The agency was created on August 7, 1789 when then President George Washington signed a congressional act transferring all lighthouses away from state control and into the new federal Bureau of Lighthouses under the Department of the Treasury. Control of the US Lighthouse Service was transferred in 1939 to the US Coast Guard who have since taken over the maintenance and operation of all US lighthouses.
